I love these people I made

Aren't they so cute! How I was blessed to have them I will never really comprehend. Some of my sweetest gifts ever. What a great Mother's day. I want to brag and say how much I loved today and how much I appreciate my sweet little family. They brought me breakfast in bed (even after I had already taken a shower), suffered through pictures with me (which my kids hate pictures so it was, in fact, a gift), made a fancy dinner, and Stewart gave me a new temple dress. Life is blissful and blessed these days with Stewart home 24/7 and we are enjoying being spoiled with time to do the little things we have always been too busy to do. My husband is the best thing that has ever happened to me and he is spoiling me with doing all these little projects around the house like painting the bathrooms, our bedroom,... so today was just the cherry on top. I love being a mother and having a day to take it all in is wonderful. It is humbling, tiring, refining, and rewarding beyond measure. I wish I were better at it but so very grateful for the gift of trying my best to raise these beautiful little spirits. I am so grateful for all the beautiful women who have touched my life. Happy Mother's Day to all of you!

Genevieve has three months under her belt!

Oh, my this girl is the joy of my heart right now. Whenever I am feeling stressed and/or depressed all I have to do is plop myself down with her and talk to her and look at her and adore her and all is right with the world. She makes me feel like the luckiest mom in the world. She is pretty particular about her naps so we try to stay home as much as possible which is sort of nice. And like all my babies she takes these ridiculously long naps. She is rolling over a tiny bit, she is laughing, she doesn't like being tickled very much, she has this super deep laugh that cracks me up, she loves music, she's loves being held super close (she'll be crying and then I rest my forehead on hers and she is instantly calm), and of course I love love her dimples. She is getting super chubby. None of Angie's handmedowns are working too well since Angeli was this scrawny little stick baby so I am having fun buying little things here and there. ;) The kids absolutely love her to pieces. Angeli is the cutest mini-mom on the face of the earth. Genevieve is such a blessing in our lives. I was thinking the other day about how if she hadn't surprised us with my pregnancy how Stewart and I would have been in Thailand instead of sitting in the hospital with her fitting RSV a couple months ago and while that wasn't all that fun we all agree she could rock Thailand any day. ;) she's like having our own little piece of heaven.

This is just for kicks, here is Angeli at six months in the same dress, clearly sisters right?!?!

Business Offer

We'll be moving next July and thus I will be pulling up shop for my hand print business which is going to make my returning costumers rather sad. So I thought it'd be cool to train someone the same way I was trained to take over for me in Reno. Its a great little out of home business that has a lot of growth potential in Reno. I never really tapped into all that is could grow into because with so many kids and Stewart's schedule I never had the time - I think if I had done one of the local festivals I would have made a fortune! I would love being able to to start letting my costumers know who will be taking over for me. Seriously I would make it so easy for you...you'd know were to buy everything, how to advertise, how to get your business license going, how to make them cute, what glazes work best,...you'd be taking over a very well oiled machine. Anyways, if you are interested let me know. I would be really excited to teach someone all the tricks of the trade.

Dear 2011,

Dear 2011,

Listen, it has been good so far but honestly I am done with the ER well, hospitals in general when I really think about it. So if we can agree that I have hit my quota for a while I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.

Emily

*Stewart had his tonsils out on Monday morning. Everything went really well. Then last night as he was talking he felt something crack in his throat and he started hemorrhaging blood from his old left tonsil sight. Man, it was a lot of blood. I rushed him to the ER and right as we pulled up his bleeding stopped. They checked him in fast - holding a mixing bowl filled with blood will do that for you. But the register lady threw out the blood in the bowl. Silly lady. I guess she didn't like looking at it. So when the doc saw us and Stewart had clotted up they sent us home. We tried to tell them he had bled a lot but they said it seemed fine and to go home. We felt a little stupid for going in and hoped it was just a fluke thing. Well, an hour later the clot dislodged and we were off for round two at the ER. This time it was a bit more bleeding and he was still bleeding when we got there. - It was pretty scary watching my husband spitting and coughing up blood like that. I would inwardly freak out when he would throw up from all the blood in his stomach. This time when the doctor came in the room he took one look at Stewart and his giant bowl of blood and said "I am calling the surgeon." and was off getting things in place for Stewart's care. Stewart started to get really light headed from losing so much blood and he was hooked up to an IV and was taken off to surgery to re-cauterize the wound. It was a LONG night. We got home 5:30 am just as the sun was peaking up over the hills. I am so grateful for my dear friend for coming over twice in the night despite all her own children at home and rocking my little baby and making sure my kids were safe so I could be with Stewart. She was the one who saved the day with Genvieve's hospital stay and I am so glad I have someone I can call no matter the time or day. Stewart is doing alright. He is in a lot of pain and is super drained. So our take home lesson...think long and hard about semi-elective surgeries. You could be in for more then you are bargaining for. Oh, and when it says stay in bed for two to three days and slowly increase activity. Listen.

Oh, I'm in LOVE!

My little baby girl is my favorite little baby I ever had named Genevieve. ;) Oh, I love her like crazy. I know I don't look real cute (just got back from a run) but she is such a doll. How did I get so lucky?!?!

And the proud big brother... so adorable!

Grandpa Rasmussen's Funeral

This past week we were lucky enough to be able to attend Stewart's paternal grandfather's funeral. He passed away at the age of 88 peacefully in his sleep with his dear wife there holding his hand as he passed. For the last year his health had been declining and so in the end I think the family was happy for him to have relief from his body that was sick with age. Being at the funeral was such a sweet experience that really touched my heart. He was truly one of the most Christlike people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. I wrote this on his online obituary page,

"I will always remember the first time I met Grandpa Rasmussen. My boyfriend at the time, Stewart, was excited for me to meet his grandparents and we stopped in casually to say hello. He greeted me with a warm smile. He put his arm around me, called me a "doll", and made it sound as if I was the talk of the town. He served us his classic ice cream and got to work making me feel like a million dollars. When I told him I liked to run and would run up to the "Y" occasionally he was so impressed that from that time on he would tell everyone that I ran the "Y" even if it had been years since I had run it. :) He would go out of his way to make me feel loved and so talented and appreciated. I loved him the first time I met him and will forever have a special place for him in my heart. He cared for me as if I were is own granddaughter and that meant the world to me. I am so grateful that my children can claim him as their great grandfather. I hope they continue his legacy of tenderness, charity, and love. As my father would say, "He was a prince among men."

Here are some pictures and thoughts from the funeral that I want to remember:

Wednesday we made the long drive to Utah arriving at my brother's home at 2:30am. We spent Thursday morning with my sister-in-law Kristine which was wonderful. She is such a saint, I just love spending time with her. I went for a short little run. Oh, I love running in Utah. The mountains are absolutely breathtaking. Breathtaking. That afternoon we met up with the Ras crew to pay homage to Grandpa by eating at one of his favorite places, Chuck-a-Rama. :O) We filled our tummies and hearts with the feast of food and family.Later that evening we attended the viewing. It was nice to be able to see grandpa and let it sink in deeper that he was in fact gone. We enjoyed seeing so many family and friends there as well.

I caught this picture of Grandma saying goodbye to her sweet heart. I thought it was so sweet how she was holding out her hand to him.

Mom and Dad have been there for Grandma and have dried her tears and warmed her heart countless times as she has been living with them these past months. I know they will continue to be there for her and lighten her burdens. They are angels on earth.

Friday morning was the funeral. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful service, which I was able to enjoy thanks to Aunt Mary Anne coming to babysit Genevieve for me during the service. BLESS her heart! Hearing all the sweet things about grandpa was so lovely. Remembering him and recognizing the legacy of Christlike love he left behind really made me so thankful that I had the opportunity to be his "granddaughter". I also came away with a desire to be a better person. He loved everyone and made sure they felt like they were on top of the world. I was touched at how happy we were able to be because of how great a man he was and because of our testimonies that we will all be reunited again someday. We will all miss him but know he is so very very happy now.
That night we had a Rasmussen family party at grandma and grandpa's house soaking in the sun, playing games, and visiting with each other. It felt like the old times when the family would always get together and spend lazy fun days all together. It was just lovely.
Saturday we spent listening to conference and visiting with more family and friends that we hadn't seen is such a long time. The boys headed up to Salt Lake to attend the priesthood session in person and met up with my Brother Bob and his older boys. They loved it and celebrated after with my brother's tradition of In-and-Out.

Sunday we headed to David and Sherrie's house for our traditional conference breakfast. We were going to head home after morning session but we decided to stay an extra day because of the snow and Stewart's bad cold he came down with. David and Sherrie are really wonderful people. They love our kids as if they were their own grandbabies and Sherrie's food is seriously divine! That night we headed to my brother Bob's home and enjoyed dinner with them and their family. Love those people...Bob told us stories about my dad and his conversion, I thought it was really fun to hear.

Overall it was therapeutic and wonderful. I am not sure when we will be able to be back in Utah and be able to enjoy our family so much but I hope it isn't too long. Watching the kids LOVE being with their cousins was priceless. When we were packing up to go all of them were crying that they never wanted to go home. ;) I cant wait to be with them all again! I sure hope they start Rasmussen family reunions soon!

Grandpa Remembered

Stewart's Grandfather Passed away two weeks ago and I wanted to save these beautiful words written about him so my children can know how truly wonderful their great grandfather he was and is.

This is his obituary written by Lind Williams (son-in-law)

Lloyd Evan Rasmussen, 88, passed away peacefully at the home of his son Garth Rasmussen in Henderson, Nevada on March 23, 2011. He was born on March 21, 1923 in Fairview, Utah to Wilford Woodruff Rasmussen and Matilda Winkelmann Rasmussen. After spending his childhood years in Fairview, his family moved to Provo, Utah. He attended Brigham Young High School where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, and baseball.

In fact, it was at a B.Y. High vs. Provo High rivalry game where he met his future wife, Nadine Farr. Lloyd was playing basketball for B.Y. High and Nadine was a cheerleader for Provo High. Lloyd was dribbling down the sideline when Nadine accidentally tripped him. As they both tell it, that’s where he first fell for her, and they’ve been in love ever since. They married in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple on September 23, 1943. He served in the Army and was stationed overseas during World War II. He graduated from LDS Business College in Salt Lake City and then worked as an accountant for the U.S. Steel Geneva Plant until his retirement.

Always active in the LDS Church, he has served in a variety of positions including being a counselor in two bishoprics. During many years as a scoutmaster and a baseball coach, he was a positive influence in the lives of many young men. Lloyd and his wife Nadine served in the London England South Mission and have also served as Temple Workers in the Provo LDS Temple.

Lloyd and Nadine have four children: Susan Green, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Meridee Williams and husband Lind, Provo, Utah; Garth L. Rasmussen and wife Kathy, Henderson, Nevada; and Shaun F. Rasmussen and wife Susan, Eldorado Hills, California. They have 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings: Harold, Merlin, Elden, and Leah. He is survived by his wife Nadine.

Perhaps his most lasting legacy is his complete selflessness and tender regard for all that knew him. One could not visit their home without Lloyd inviting them to eat, and one could not eat without Lloyd coaxing them to eat more. Neighbors, family, friends, and strangers all benefited from his sharing attitude. He took a personal interest in and was a friend to everyone he met. He loved BYU sports, and he loved to fish, boat, hike, and camp. When camping, he took the time to get to know every stranger he met, and he could tell you the name, hometown, and a personal story about everyone in the campground within a couple of hours after setting up camp. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will forever remember his tender heart, the smile on his face, and the tears of gratitude in his eyes.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bonneville 4th Ward Chapel, 1285 East 300 South, in Provo. Family and friends may call on Thursday evening, March 31 at the Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street in Provo or at a viewing Friday at the church one hour prior to the funeral services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery following the services.

This was the talk Megan Willimas Hinckley (granddaughter) gave at his funeral. She did a really beautiful job with it.

You might wonder who the luckiest kids in all the world are. Well I can tell you. They’re not kids sponsored by Oprah, or kids whose parents own candy stores. The luckiest kids in the world are the grandkids of Lloyd Rasmussen.

When the 18 of us saw that Grandpa Ras, our favorite person in the world, was dying and would soon be leaving us, we knew we had to do something to thank him for the many things we have learned from him. Each of us wrote him a short letter thanking him and with our parents’ help we found pictures of grandpa and each one of his grandkids. We made them into a book that we will forever treasure.

Today I’ll be sharing thoughts from all of my cousins’ letters. Though he didn’t often give us formal lessons—the things we learned from watching this sweet man have shaped our lives.

He taught us what it means to be a husband. We loved hearing him call Grandma “Miss America.” We loved seeing our grandpa escort Grandma, Aunt Winnie, and their neighbor Helen to plays and sporting events at BYU. He’d drop off the girls at the door, go park the car a mile away, jog back to the event, and do it all over again at the end. He took such great care of “the girls.” And if we had the chance to go with Gramps, he gave us the same treatment. Grandpa’s love for Grandma was evident in everything he did. Miss America is a fitting title for Grandma because Grandpa truly treated her like a queen. From grandpa the boys learned how to be husbands and the girls learned what to look for in one.

Grandpa taught us to have fun. Nobody played cards better than Grandpa Ras—and when you got to learn a new game by being on his team, you knew you were gonna win. Almost as fun as watching Grandpa’s card skills, was hearing him shout phrases like “Let’s bid ‘em to the moon!” Or “who dealt this mess?” He always had his card ready to play before the hand was led—like he knew what you’d play before you did. We loved seeing Grandma steal peeks at his hand (though she’d never admit it). In addition to card games—Grandpa filled our summers with magic. Grandpa often took the boys on backpacking trips in the mountains. He’d give us rides on his old Honda motorcycle and take us camping in his trailer. Grandpa would spend the night out on the parade route for the 4th of July to secure a prime location every year!

One of the things we loved best, though, was boating. Gramps taught us to waterski and if we were a little too timid, he’d talk us into taking a “nice, slow, sensible ride” on the tube. It didn’t take long for us to realize there was nothing nice, slow, or sensible about his tube rides—once I truly wondered if he was trying to kill me—but as we hung on to the straps and each other for dear life, hitting wave after wave, we fell in love with the boat, with muddy, stinky Utah Lake, and with the knowledge we had that our grandpa was the funnest grandpa on the block. Those summers on the lake transformed us from cousins to best friends.

We all remember Grandpa tickling us. He didn’t ever tickle us until we wet our pants—we left those shenanigans up to Shaun and Sue—but we could always count on Grandpa chasing us around the yard if we taunted him by dissing his favorite singer. Saying “Frank Sinatra’s Not So Hot-ra” was always a request for tickles. We also remember Gramps tickling us with the question “Who’s girl are you?” “Or who’s boy are you?” He wouldn’t stop until we’d shout with tears streaming down our faces “Your girl, Grandpa!” or “I’m your boy!” We’ll always be your boys and girls, Grandpa, always.

We also remember the way Grandpa made us feel about ourselves. Each of us felt like the favorite grandchild and we each have solid evidence to prove it. He would dote on us, call our parents to brag about us, and make us feel like we were amazing even for accomplishing dumb things like checking the flavor to water ratio of his crystal light concoctions. He always called on our birthdays—often before 7 am.

He made us feel important by spending time with us. We loved BYU games. He’d hand the usher a handful of tickets and then shoo in all us grandkids before the usher had a chance to see if the number of tickets actually equaled the number of kids. We’d watch grandpa diligently keep basketball statistics during the game. When we’d watch games on tv at Grandpa’s house, he’d pace around the room, jump on his mini trampoline, and do push ups to calm his nerves. We loved watching him worry—even if the game wasn’t close.

Grandpa taught us to be generous. You knew when you went to Grandma and Grandpa’s that Grandpa would feed you. Often we’d cry out “No! No more Grandpa! Really I’m full!” before he threw another scoop of potatoes onto our plates. Grandpa always had a basement full of pop and a freezer full of ice cream. He kept a candy machine on the counter, a bag of popcorn in the hall, and licorice in the cupboard. And he liked nothing more than to feed you and watch you enjoy it. He always had a favorite restaurant. We remember trips to BYU cafeteria and Chucka-rama (which we lovingly called Chuck-a-rampa) He loved places where “you can see all the food” and pick what you want. He also sent us on runs for subway sandwiches, Little Cesar’s Pizza, and McDonalds for Big Mac Monday. We will always remember how kindly and patiently he treated us when we broke mirrors, lamps, and even once or twice the pool table. And we’ll never forget the time we found and devoured a bag of licorice in the basement without asking. We felt such remorse at having “stolen” from our grandpa that we sadly headed upstairs to make our apologies. Grandpa exclaimed, “Holy Toledo! I forgot! I bought a bag for each of you!” and he handed each of us our own 2 lb bag of licorice.
Our grandpa wasn’t only a true gentleman, but also a truly gentle man. He cried with joy over everything: mission calls, engagements, weddings, BYU acceptance letters, birth announcements. We cry with joy over the life our Grandpa lived and the wonderful man he was. We knew of the tender concern and love that he felt for each of us and we knew we were prized in his heart. Grandpa, you will always be prized in our hearts, and we can’t wait to see you again.

With love,
Your grand children

Thinking

Things I was thinking today:

- My love language is words...if I send you an email, give you a phone call, write something about you on my blog, comment on your blog or facebook or send a card it is my way of saying I love you. but I do try and speak peoples real love languages too. seriously I do - even though I often stink at it.

- I hate going to the food bank but since we could use it I go... someday my husband will make us a lot of money and I will help people who need it and I will never forget the days when we waited in line for food so my kids would not have to go without. Don't get me wrong we aren't starving or homeless but we are still poor enough that I trek up the hill with my four kids and get food hand outs to help us get by. its a humbling experience for me but I thank God for the sweet people that do it for our community since the recession. Angels those people!

- I am anxious about our car...in the shop again. I wish we could just trade it in and buy a really reliable car. All in good time I guess. for now we are forking out $1990 for our transmission to be fixed. awesome.

- I wish I was a kinder person...more patient, less hormonal and cranky.

- I am so in love with my baby...look how cute she was last night- I really enjoy reading books with my husband...we've started a thing where we take turns picking out book series to read out loud to each other. Right now we are reading the series The Great and Terrible by Chris Stewart. Almost done with book one and I think it is really interesting.

- My sister told me that one of the best schools in the world (yes, that bestest) is in Tucson of all places. Awesome!

- I love Spring but for some reason it is making me anxious this year...I cant believe it is already here and I thought I would be more on top of things by now...I guess I need to chill. I do have a two month old baby after all.

- This is Stewart's last week of medical school! I cant believe it. In some ways I feel a little sad. I cant believe we are done with medical school. Starting new chapters can be hard for me sometimes. I now residency will be hard. But its a step forward so for that I am grateful.

- Stewart is rocking out his wood stuff on etsy. He loves it. Go Stewart! - I often have to remind him, that it is a hobby, that in fact he is going to be a doctor when he grows up not a carpenter. He is trying to be both I guess. :O)

- I need to get dressed and face the day ahead of me...food bank and sanding ceramics here I come!

Hair Trauma!

I thought I would trim up everyone's hair because we are going to see a ton of family this next week and I wanted us to look all spiffed up. But my trim went all wrong and I completely butchered Angeli's hair! Oh, I feel so bad about it. She told me to not cut too much because she wanted to grow her hair out like Rapunzel in Tangled. We laughed and I told her it probably would never get that long but she could grow it out long - she's been growing it out for a long time now anyways....so sad. I tried and tried to fix it but it kept getting worse and shorter and shorter. Stewart started to freak out and so was I. That's when I made an emergency phone call to my girl friend who happens to be a very talented hair dresser and asked her to save Angeli's hair. Angeli and I jumped in the car and thanks to my friend's talent she salvaged her remaining hair. She now has a short cute little bob/pixie cut.

When we headed home I was nervous what the little boys would say. I knew if they said she looked like a boy she would freak - happened last time she chopped her hair on her own and it broke her heart. But when we walked in the door Bridger excitedly announced that she looked like a movie star, which all girls know is the next best thing to a princess... so now she loves it. Bless Bridger's heart! And bless my girl friend too! Stewart and I decided I am not allowed to cut her hair ever again. Here is her salvaged do...she looks like a mini adult, a movie star even. ;)

Match Day Finally Arrived!

So we set our alarms and got up early to get the whole family ready to be at the school before 8:45 when they recommended students arrive by....and well we sure were. We were a bit early. :) So Stewart seized the opportunity to teach the kids what it really takes to go to medical school -playing Foosball of course! ;)
After that we headed down to the party. They had it decorated all cute for St. Patty's day and their envelopes weren't envelopes at all but rather very lucky shamrocks. :)
After a cute little speech from that cute tiny lady who basically runs the medical school as far as I am aware because she is the only lady ever giving speeches, we finally got our "envelope"! We were so excited and so nervous...
Then we were shocked and happy...

We made it official and pinned it on the map...

ta da!...
Then we had to take a picture with the dead Irish man to celebrate...

And NOW we are trying to wrap our heads around the next two years ahead of us. Tucson was our number two choice but for some reason we didn't really give it much thought...we didn't think they would like us that much and the interview was right in the middle of a ton of other ones so it sort of got a bit forgotten. But when we made our list we just felt like it should be number two but that was all the thought we gave it.....Anyways, now we know where we will be going but we have to wait 15 months before we can get there. Nice and a little weird at the same time. Today while I sort of mourned all the places and fun identities we'd not get to assume like: Texans with big hair, big houses, big everything, or food snobs eating our locally grown organic food in picturesque Vermont, or imitation liberal "wineos" in Sac, or blue grass rocking hillbillies in Kentucky,....I thought about what we'd get to morph into as we assumed our new lives in Tucson. I was drawing a blank. Then it hit me as I flipped through the UofA Magazine and realized that EVERYONE in EVERY picture was wearing flips flops that we wouldn't really be morphing into anything. We were going to fit right in. Flip flops year round are exactly the kind of people we are. I think it will be an easy and very natural fit for us. I was hoping for exciting and maybe a little sophisticated change but easy and right is what we got. I guess in the long run that is good for us. Our family will thrive there and as a mother I couldn't ask for anything more. Arizonia here we come! You're going to love us, and I think we are going to love ya right back! :O)
